The new They Might Be Giants app (available for iOS) is a modern play off of a brilliant song-sharing concept the band used to employ when landlines and answering machines were all the rage. Back in 1983, TMBG launched Dial-A-Song as a way for fans to hear exclusive tracks and re-recordings by calling a pre-recorded answering machine message. In 2013, the TMBG app takes the place of Dial-A-Song by sharing a new TMGB track each day, albeit material from one of the band’s previously released albums.
Why abandon Dial-A-Song? I’m not sure—I love the original concept. The retro act of calling and listening to an answering machine carries with it elements of fun, nostalgia and quirky personality that fans just won’t receive with a modern mobile app.
