Today marks the official release of What Are The Odds?—a free interactive book for the iPad that I recently designed for LA indie band, UBYK, with lead singer Roman Roze. Several months in the making, What Are The Odds? reflects my desire to help bands connect with their audience in a more meaningful and entertaining way. Running RökRiot has afforded me insights into how record labels, musicians and other designers are enhancing album releases and it has inspired me to develop projects that provide creative ways for musicians to interact with their fans.
What Are The Odds? serves as a companion to UBYK’s most recent EP, The Odds. Utilizing Apple’s new iBooks Author software, the book makes use of the iPad’s multi-touch interactivity in some interesting (and non-digital) ways, the foremost of which is a scavenger hunt that officially went live in LA’s Elysian Park this morning. Within chapter two of What Are The Odds? (“the hunt for matryoshka”), you will find a map with clues that can be revealed through interactive tabs. Rewards include exclusive tracks and invite-only performances.
What Are The Odds? also features a one-of-a-kind interactive recording studio turned gift shop that allows fans to purchase items used by the band during their late-night Odds recording sessions. The iBook also includes photography shot by UBYK’s lead singer, a full album commentary by the band, as well as a complete set of lyrics.
Stay tuned. More innovation to come . . .
